Turn off the engine and remove the timing light. Make any necessary adjustments if the timing has shifted. After securing the distributor, recheck the timing to ensure it hasn’t changed during the tightening process. Reconnect the vacuum advance hose to the distributor. Once the desired timing is achieved, tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to secure it in place. Continue adjusting and checking until the timing is set according to the specifications from the sticker or manual. Check the timing marks again with the timing light and note the changes. Rotate the distributor clockwise or counterclockwise slightly to advance or retard the timing, respectively. Be careful not to rotate the distributor while loosening the bolt. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt using a wrench. Observe the timing marks while the engine is idling and note the position of the pointer. The timing light will flash each time the spark plug fires, illuminating the timing marks. Aim the timing light at the timing marks on the harmonic balancer and the timing cover.
Start the engine and allow it to idle. Attach the timing light’s inductive pickup around the number one spark plug wire. Connect the black wire to the negative terminal of the battery. Attach the red wire of the timing light to the positive terminal of the battery. Disconnect the vacuum advance hose from the distributor and plug it temporarily. Locate the distributor cap on the engine. Clean the timing marks if they are dirty or hard to see. Look for timing marks on the balancer and the timing cover. Open the hood and locate the harmonic balancer at the front of the engine. 5.7 vortec distributor timing manual#
Locate the timing specifications sticker under the hood or consult the vehicle’s manual for the correct timing values. Ensure the engine is at operating temperature by running it for a few minutes. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Luckily, there are a few ways that you can do this without having to use a scanner.
Timing on this type of engine is critical, and if it’s not set correctly, it can cause major problems.
